Two backyard trees. Decades of history. One seriously good rakia.

Our next product release is something we’ve lovingly dubbed Papa’s Plums, and is available only to our Inner Circle members.

MEET BRYCE & DANI

Dani’s Plum tree has been growing in her parents yard as long as she can remember. She has no idea what kind of plums they are but “if you look through a Bunning’s catalogue in like, the early 90s and find whatever is on sale that's probably it”.

Over the years, the plums have been eaten, jammed, and/or left to fertilise the lawn. That is, until Bryce came across us through a mate and thought, Hey, what if we turned this into something even better?—which is how we ended up transforming their excess plum into a premium small-batch rakia.

Bryce, who holds a chemistry degree, figured this was the perfect way to put both his scientific background and Dani’s plum tree to good use. While we initially got excited thinking he meant distilling (because the only medicine we know comes in a bottle with 40% ABV) - turns out he’s actually working on something more “medical” 😅

Meet Grace

The other half of the plums in our “Papa’s Plums” come from a tree planted way back in the ‘80s—specifically, in the first and only family home of our mate Grace. The tree itself was a gift from a fellow Filipina migrant worker to Grace’s mum back in 1984, and it’s been thriving ever since.

Most of the time these backyard plums were picked whilst still unripe and eaten with salt and/or fermented shrimp paste (called 'bagoong' in Filipino/Tagalog), or left to ripen on tree to enjoy as nature's sweet treat. Every summer, when the tree explodes with fruit, it’s a reminder of the love Grace’s mum showed through her cooking.

These are Moyer plums—a classic European variety that’s great for fresh eating, or, as Grace recently learned, the same type used to make prunes.
